What a CRAYOLAful Day with LSGH Grade 5A!

Two days ago, I had the opportunity to speak to the bright students (Grade 5 Advanced Class) of La Salle Green Hills on the topic “Importance and Uses of Colors in Design”.

Design is a very broad topic and there are several directions I can take when talking about it to a group of people. I had an outline and a purpose to work toward, easier for me to write the rest of the presentation. (1-2) Some major points on the Importance and Uses of Colors in the following area – fashion, interior, product, graphic or web. (3) Activity.

I wanted to make it easier for them to follow along with me and stay engaged. I was also comforted by the fact that I know this speaking topic well. I can talk about design, colors, fashion all day long so I thought of it as an opportunity to share what I know.

Knowing the subject well also allowed me to talk unscripted. Good thing, I had my slideshow to help me stay on track.

It is my intent to encourage in-depth discussion about colors yet so little time. I decided to put an activity because Art is generally undestood as any activity or product done by people with aesthetic purspose – something that expresses an idea and emotion.

So I asked the boys one simple question before I put out the materials for activity.

“What brand will pop up into your head if I say crayons”. Then everyone said ” C- R- A- Y – O- L – A”!

We all grew up with Crayola crayons, that famous scent and what a better way to end my talk than with a box of crayons and a kid’s imagination.

Since I am into designing, I injected some fashion in my activity. I grouped them into 3 teams. I brought new white plain shirts inorder for them to design using Crayola fabric crayons and Crayola markers.
