HU Cares for the jeepney drivers

Posted by Heidi Uy

Hello September! “Ber” months have begun and the Philippines has the longest Christmas season in the world as we start counting down the days to big celebration – yes, the reason for the season is the birth of Jesus. But before He came in this world, we have our Blessed Mother Mary first and today, we honor her Nativity.

What a better way to celebrate her birthday than to share our blessings to others, of course,  in our own little way.

Would you like to know who we care about this month of September? Let me share a little story behind this planning process. I’m sure most of you are aware of my advocacy to help the disadvantaged people, so for the remaining months of 2020 I have penciled in the recipients of HU Cares. How lovely to know that God puts you into someone’s mind. A dear friend with a generous heart (who wants to remain “anonymous” but I like to put her initials GBD) read my article HU Cares last month, messaged me and said she likes to collaborate/give donation for September HU Cares. Oh wow, thank you! I have never expected any help from others but God sends “earth angel/s” to fulfill HIS mission. How wonderful! How can you say no to someone who likes to be of help and believes in my advocacy.

For the month of September, HU Cares x GBD for the “Jeepney drivers”.  Their route is to/from – Makati Burgos/Herran/Bukid/Guadalupe/Padre Faura.

With the long lockdown, no one will be surprised if they lost their jobs. Public transport was halted. They have not picked up passengers amid the Covid-19 restrictions for a couple of months. With no income and debts piling up some of them started living in the jeepney with their family. For old drivers, finding another job seems impossible. For some, the owners of their vehicles have already sold those jeepneys due to the phasing-out program and the lockdown. My heart was in anguished when I heard and read this in the news.

So earlier today, we sent grocery items to them (a family effort, indeed).  The way we would like to honor the Nativity of the Blessed Mother, to welcome the “Ber” months,  to be grateful for the past eight months, and to celebrate the post birthday of a dear friend who collaborated with HU Cares. There are multitude of reasons to smile and give smile to others.  May we all have a joyous and a blessed last quarter of the year. Let’s still have a clear 20/20 vision despite of this pandemic.

Disclaimer: This effort is not in partnership or collaboration with SM Supermarket. We prepared 30 bags- 25 for the jeepney drivers and 1 for the coordinator. More is better than less.

So HU Cares, it’s my Mother’s Birthday today.  She is more precious than jewels. (Proverbs 3:15) Happy Birthday Mama Mary! 🙏🏻❤️
