Guam is known for shopping haven or merely a tax-free shopping in paradise. When I told my son we have already finalized our Guam trip, the only thing he has been searching about Guam was streetwear store. He is always on the lookout for new releases. Such a big transition from being a kid to a young man. Where did the time go?
I am sure that most mothers or I would say, parents, may have a difficult time understanding exactly what streetwear fashion is all about.
Let me give you a short description of what a streetwear fashion is. According to urban dictionary, it is initially formed as a clothing style meant to showcase the care-free nature of mainly west-coast skateboard culture, streetwear gained notoriety or it’s urban appeal and popularization among celebrities and social media. Some brands that are popular among streetwear include Supreme, Bape, Ripndip, Anti Social Social Club, Billionaire Boys Club, VLone and many more.
Many students like to splurge on streetwear clothing. I believe it’s a matter of expression. The big question is, would you allow your kids to splurge on luxury items? That would be another interesting topic to discuss.
But for now, allow me to share with you my son’s cool discovery…. CROOK GUAM, the leading destination for streetwear fashion in Guam.
Since we are visiting Guam, we took the opportunity to visit his store and interview this young entrepreneur and rapper Jeffrey Crook.
I enjoyed a lengthy conversation about bits and pieces of his life, his entrepreneur’s competitive nature and his passion as a rapper. I dig deeper into Jeffrey’s thought process – the man behind CROOK GUAM.
HU : How did you start your business? Creating your own design?
JC: I appreciate how profound my parents’ influence was. I grew up with parents that were entrepreneurs. My dad is a Filipino optemetrist on Guam. Back when I was a child, my dad sold the latest eyeglass and sunglass wear. My Japanese mother owned a clothing boutique. This is the only thing I know how to make money.
In the beginning when we started pushing it to the locals, they don’t understand why the prices are so high but now they are becoming more mainstream. The locals appreciate the exclusivity. They see now famous people rocking it.
Creating my own design? Look at all these designs (pointing out those streetwear clothing) , I think everything is simple, I like my design, I know where to get the stuff so I think can make my own line.
HU: Who is Jeffrey Crook in terms of fashion?
JC: Jeffrey Crook is someone who represents timeless fashion. Something that is not trendy now but trendy later.
HU: How did you start rapping?
JC: I started watching Curtis James Jackson III, professionally, 50 cent- an American rapper, actor, businessman, investor. At the age of 13, I started mimicking him, his voice, moves and everything in between. That is when I learned the greatest lesson, you have to be careful what you watch on TV.
HU: Why did you choose the name CROOK?
JC: I got this name from my experience in the past. As you could see my signature logo has three crosses symbolizing the two thieves crucified on crosses to the right and left of Jesus. This logo expresses my new life in Christianity and relationship with God. I would like to put myself in the place of the penitent thief who said “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom”.
A lovely Sunday that was, as I welcome my birthmonth. Thank you so much Jeffrey for opening up to me. It was such a pleasure meeting you.
Thank you for making this boy ecstatic. Just imagine the smile on my son’s face when he visited your store.
So when in Guam, don’t forget to visit and purchase your streetwear clothing only in CROOK GUAM located at 725 Pale San Vitores Road, Tamuning Guam.
